Organize your work place |
Today’s unions represent more than
16,000,000 employees in the
That makes us one of the largest, strongest
and most diverse voluntary membership organizations of any kind.
And, with YOUR help, YOUR voice, YOUR ideas, YOUR energy and YOUR
experience, we’ll be able to accomplish even more a shared American prosperity
and a stronger democracy in the workplace.
FIRST:
You need to ensure that you have the support of the majority of your
co-workers. To establish a union in a workplace, a majority of employees must
express support for the union. To do this you probably have to indoctrinate
your self and co-workers on how the union works and what it can do for them.
SECOND:
If you have met the first step, we recommend that you contact a union
that is willing to represent your line of work. The Union will assist you in
getting to sign representation cards. Most unions will request 75% of eligible
employees to sing representation cards as you may lose support when the company
starts its campaign to get employees to lose interest.
THIRD:
Once you have the cards you need to file a representation petition with
NLRB (national labor relations board) to request a secret ballot election to be
held by a government agent. Please note that the government under the strictest
confidentiality holds the cards and your employer does not know who signed
them.
FOURTH:
Once you have file a petition you need to stay strong, as the company
will try anything to keep the union out. The factors that will determine
whether you win or lose the election are your leadership commitment, support of
your co-workers and the planning of a good organizing campaign. Many times you
will have to make house visits, attend meetings, make phone calls, distribute
flyers, doing research and rebutting the company’s tactics to keep the union
out.
FIFTH:
Once you have won the election the company is required by law to
negotiate a contract that will regulate your wages, hours, terms and conditions
of employment. This will take lots of time, energy and support from your
co-workers and needs to be done by somebody with experience.
This seems like a long, tedious process but it is worth it, as it will
impact positively your life and your ability to make a better living under
better conditions.
